One of the major problems faced by the Republic of Indonesia since its birth has been an alleged lack of genuine indigenous entrepreneurs despite various state policies to foster and promote self-reliant businesspeople. Regimes have changed, from Liberal to Guided Democracy, and to the New Order in 1966, but, so say most observers, the situation has remained basically the same, with a continuing absence of indigenous, especially Javanese, business leaders.
