ABSTRACT
Shared languages establish fields of communication and create feelings of common understanding and shared reality among their speakers. They are thus liable to create what Anderson (1983, 1991) has called ‘imagined’ communities. However, shared languages alone would be empty vehicles; they must carry ideas which can be shared.
