chapter  7
Fashions and Styles: Maltese Women's Headdress
Pages 20

Lexical information on the subject of headdress in the Maltese language is limited and the researcher who wishes to pursue this subject in detail is confronted with several linguistic and historical problems. There is no information on the early medieval Maltese attire and it is only from the sixteenth century onwards that traveIlers to the Maltese islands start to make sporadic comments on dress. HistoricaIly, the subject of costumes in Malta was dealt with by Cassar-Pullicino (1966: 149-216) with accessible data drawn from documents, deeds and travel literature. However, an adequate linguistic inquiry on Maltese dress terms, in particular those dealing with head covering is lacking.
