‘Charles Elliot’s reputation was wrecked ashore; the shattered remains of his cutter Louisa lay on the rocks of Sanchuen; several ships of the expeditionary force suffered considerable damage (quite apart from the loss of members of fishing families from Hong Kong) during the two day typhoon, and the storm returned to the scene of its ravaging on 26 July.
