- Polygamy: Favourable treatment for Muslims?

The present section provides an overview of Indian law and policy on the suppression (or rather toleration, as we shall see) of polygamous marriages. It is evident that polygamy is widely seen as inherently bad and is frequently linked to Islam, thus adding to Islamophobic trends and current processes of 'othering' anything that concerns Muslims in many parts of the world. Un surprisingly, much of the academic writing on polygamy is instantly linkable to this great internationally contested issue, often envisaged as a struggle between tradition and modernity, an important battle between uncivilised non-Europeans and civilised Europeans, often more narrowly just between Muslims and the rest of the world.
