Family Relationships

The women’s folk songs raise several interesting questions about familial relationships in Turkmenistan. Why does the Turkmen girl sing so many songs about her brother, for example, and why does he sound more like a romantic hero than a sibling? Why does she sing adoringly of her beautiful sister-in-law, yet hardly mention her own sister? Why do the songs contain so many conflicting images of married life?
