Toy Aydymlayy (wedding songs)

The wedding song tradition is still quite strong in the Kaka area. In the spring of 1998, I visited one of the small towns in the region and met Guelendam, a woman who knows many wedding songs and is in great demand at local weddings. She learned the songs from her mother and is now teaching them to her daughters. She accompanies herself by beating a metal disc about 12 inches in diameter with the palm of her hand. She sang a part of her repertoire for me. Some of the songs I recognized from collections in the National Manuscripts Institute, but others were new to me. One that I heard for the first time is sung jokingly by the relatives of the bride as the groom and his party arrive.
