Monjukatdylar (fortune-telling songs)

How a particular fortune-telling song was interpreted depended on the situation of the woman who received it. One might see a verse as a description of her own experience, another might think of it as a prediction, and yet another might treat it as a joke. While most of the songs have a jocular and optimistic tone, others are bleak and echo the despair expressed in the darker laeleler and toy adymlary. The excitement for each participant was in anticipating her fortune and wondering whether it would validate her hopes or confirm her fears.
