ABSTRACT

Folkloric aspects of the material culture of the UAE have not received adequate attention within academic and scholarly circles concerned with cultural heritage either inside the UAE or abroad. Compared to other disciplines which are closely related to folklore, such as archaeology, studies pertaining to UAE material culture leave much to be desired. In fact, even in comparison with other UAE folklore domains, studies dealing with various aspects of UAE material culture do not seem to be founded on a solid academic basis. Doctoral and MA dissertations have examined and discussed UAE folk poetry, folk customs, beliefs and popular folk knowledge. Academics have also written numerous books and articles on the areas mentioned above. However, there are no similar contributions in the area of material culture, despite its importance in traditional societies.
