ABSTRACT
This paper is a preliminary report on the author’s investigation of some rare private records of Chinese businessmen in Hong Kong from the late nineteenth century to the first three decades of the twentieth century. The findings yield significant revelations on how Chinese businessmen were largely responsible for building up Hong Kong’s commercial networks. The findings also indicate that business activities were conducted more through personal networks than through administrative hierarchies and formal organizations.
