ABSTRACT

What would society do with a history, which has lost its credibility because it has been forced into a political uniform? History without credibility can no longer provide roots for one’s identity or legitimate circumstances. In the Eastern Europe of 1989-90 history syllabuses and textbooks were made obsolete, if not overnight, at least over summer. When the new school terms started in Berlin or in Tallinn in the autumn of 1990, the teachers had to start from scratch if they were allowed to teach at all. The previous syllabuses and textbooks - and some of the teachers - had been thrown aside.
