ABSTRACT

The Tuli force was simultaneously to create a diversion by entering Matabeleland from the south. Each column was to have with it Maxim guns on galloping carriages, and was to move with the least possible encumbrance in the shape of transport. In September evidence began to accumulate that the Matabele were making warlike preparations. Their regiments were reported to be mobilising and their wizards were said to be “doctoring” the roads leading into Mashonaland and Bechuanaland. A question arose as to the terms of service in the event of their taking the field. If a campaign in Matabeleland were undertaken, it would be as much for the protection of the settlers as to safeguard the interests of the Chartered Company.
