ABSTRACT

The prices are frequently stated to include carriage, or carriage is given in addition to the price and has been added in the table. The low level of prices in 1563-65 suggests that a carriage charge is not included in these years and they are printed with a warning ; otherwise the series is deemed to include carriage throughout. In 1561 purchases add up to 15 M and carriage (part specified as from Slough) is recorded on 15 loads in all ; the purchases are all on a similar level-8s. and 7.67s.—and are therefore all presumably exclusive of carriage. The “ load ” for carriage has been assumed in error for “ M ” and 1s. per M has been added to the prices, not 1s. per load as recorded. Slough is frequently specified as the source of the bricks and the rate of carriage is again given in 1608 and 1610at 2s. per M. Carriage from unspecified places, almost certainly including Slough, ranges from 6d. to 1s. 8d. per M 1550-62, 1s. 2d. to 2s. 1604-46 and 4s. to 6s. 1666-99.
