ABSTRACT

The annual purchase of paving tiles was usually a few C, though the range covers a few tiles to several thousand. The only descriptions recorded are in 1568 and 1618, when “ large ” paving tiles are specified, and 1653, 8 in. tiles, but from the variation of price levels it seems clear that three sizes are represented. In the table, given below, prices are separated arbitrarily (except for 8 in. in 1653) for 8 in., 10 in., and 12 in. square. The “ large ” tiles are tabulated as 12 in. in 1568 but are omitted in 1618 ; the purchase in the latter year was for 6 tiles only (at l 1/2d. each = 12.50s. per C) and appears to be out of relation with other prices (6.67s. per C-assumed 10 in.). In 1634 the tiles are specified as “ the best that ever he brought in.”
