ABSTRACT

The internal arrangement of the accounts varies considerably, each Master adopting the form that seemed best to him. For the most part receipts for rents, sales, etc., payments for wages, purchases, etc., are all mixed up, nor is it unknown for items from a much later account to be entered on a fly-leaf or blank page of an early one. The scribe was not usually a man of much education, so writing and spelling are often most obscure. The books are mostly in good condition, though some have suffered from damp.
