ABSTRACT

Until 1761 the material supplied for smocks or shirts was usually holland but in 1559-60, 1562, 1607-11, 1620-26 and 1639 entries are described only as linen. From 1762 to 1782 one dealer supplied Irish linen and the second tradesman sharing the contract either Scotch linen or holland or Irish linen at similar rates. From 1783 to 1830 Irish linen was supplied. The description is Gentish holland in 1673 and 1678 and Gulex (i.e. Jülick) holland in 1759-61. The linen is regarded as equivalent to holland throughout.
