ABSTRACT

Shoes were supplied among the Maundy gifts to poor persons : no change in price level occurs at the change from women’s to men’s shoes in 1602. The usual descriptions were strong neats’ leather (oxhide) single-soled to 1728 : single-soled 1729-88 : strong single calf skin 17891830. The shoes were therefore of similar type throughout. Changes in the method of supply were as follows :—

The effect of changes of contractor on price levels was slight both when a new tradesman was employed and when the change was from a Wardrobe official to a dealer. Only one rate occurs each year.
