ABSTRACT

The Note on Barley and Rice applies also to dried fruits so far as their source and use and the form of prices are concerned, except for raisins 1775-1826. These are in the Victualling Accounts and are quoted per ton, reduced here to s. per doz. lb., but because of the larger purchases they are not strictly comparable with the earlier Naval Stores prices and a line is drawn in the table after 1743. Contracts in the Victualling Accounts are less rigid, one rate seldom occurring for more than two quarters of the year, with sometimes three different rates in one quarter. From 5-50 tons were supplied under one contract. The yearly averages are the simple mean of all levels occurring in the year. The Raisins are sometimes described as “ Smyrna, ” “ Alexia, ” “ Denia, ” “ Turkey ” and “ Malaga. ” All kinds have been used together as descriptions are not frequent enough to determine or separate different levels. Between 1796 and 1806 most entries are for raisins and currants together.
