ABSTRACT

The source of the pitch is not stated before 1652 but from this date it is usually given. Stockholm or other Swedish pitch was usually purchased till the beginning of the eighteenth century, when Carolina, Virginia, New England and Plantation pitch was introduced and purchased almost exclusively in 1720-56. After this date Swedish pitch was again bought and English pitch begins to be specified. These two kinds supersede American supplies by 1778. There are also occasional entries of Dutch, German, Russian, Finnish and Norwegian pitch. No difference of level between the different named sources is apparent and all kinds have been used together.
