ABSTRACT

48 PRICES AND WAGES IN ENGLAND altered from 24 yds. in 1407-09 during the repeal of the statute of 27 Ed. III , c. 4. In 1468, following the increase in the statutory length from 24 to 28 yds.,1 there is a slight rise in price but a rise not equivalent to the supposed increase in length, and from 1469 to 1475 the level of 1467 is continued. There seems therefore to be no apparent increase in the size of the piece of coloured cloth from 1468 as purchased by Winchester College. From 1531 to 1623 prices are recorded by the dozen or the yard or by compound entries of both. Statutes refer to the dozen as being half a piece and not necessarily 12 yds., but equations and comparison of yard and dozen prices between 1567 and 1623 show the dozen at Winchester to be 12 yds. An exceptional entry in 1565 gives the quantity by a dozen of 18 yds. but from its level the price quoted has been as sumed to be for the usual dozen of 12 yds. From 1631 all prices are recorded by the yard.
