ABSTRACT

They have no reafon which take the Lupus cervarius for a Thoes, which we have already fhewed to jrrian, be a Lynxjfor the Rhttians which fpeak halianfr the Savoyans do to this day call him Cervario, and for the Armenian Wolf the Cicatus, and the Lupus Canarius we have already fhewed, that it is a Panther, and therefore itisneedlefs to ftand any longer upon thofe names in this place. We will therefore take it for confeffed, that the Thoes is a beaft engendered betwixt a Wolf and a F o x , whereof fome are greater and fome are fmaller, and thefe are found about the Mountain Pangemfiitm, Olympus,MyfiuSi Pindus3 and Nifa, beyond Syria, refembling for the moft part a Hyaena, having a longer body, and a ftraighter tail then a Wolf, and although it be not fo high of ftature, yet it is as nimble and as ftrong as is the Wolf, and it feemeth that the very name Thoes is taken from the celerity and fwiftnefs in running and leaping, for it getteth his living by the quicknefs of his feet. In the outward face it much refembleth a Wolf his Father, but in fpots and length of his body it refembleth a Panther his Mother ; they couple in generation like Dogs, bringing forth two or four at a time, like Wol ves, which are blinde, and their leer cloven into many toes.
