ABSTRACT

It is worth noting that while most stories in Hausa compounds are told by the women, and the grandmothers in particular – witness the constant emphasis on the details of foods and other household activities – in general, in these moralising stories, we are enjoined not to trust women. There are one or two where women are shown in a favourable light (usually the men show up unfavourably in these), but these are very much in the minority.
