ABSTRACT
Then there is the influence of an esoteric Islam which has been creeping in, especially during the last century, through the emissaries of the dervish orders. Consequently the performance of the dhikr and practices connected with saint-worship are becoming more and more the focal centre of their Islam than formerly and are bringing a fervour and devotion into the religion of the people which could never be evoked by orthodox Islam.
