ABSTRACT

We expected to arrive at the town on San Domingo, where we were going to sell the cargo, in time for Easter, and we sighted Cape Mongon, otherwise Altravela, on Holy Thursday. As we were near the shore we furled the sails so that the land might screen us from pirates, who were reported to be cruising in this neighbourhood. But as soon as it grew dark we made all sail and doubled Cape Mongon at midnight, passing the island of Beata two hours before dawn. I saw nothing of this island on account of the mist, and it was this mist which saved us.
