ABSTRACT

On my arrival at Gaudeloupe I learnt of the death of my intimate friend M. Lucien Lambert, one of the bravest and most successful corsairs that the Islands have seen for a long time. Although he had lost an arm in St. Kitts, this had not prevented him from distinguishing himself in the fighting at Guadeloupe the following year. He was wealthy enough to live at his ease, and his friends begged him not to go to sea again, but it was impossible for such a man to remain idle so long as he could serve his country. He therefore fitted out a barque of six cannons and manned her with a crew of eighty men, and for nearly two years he captured prizes and raided the English islands, frequently returning with large numbers of slaves and considerable booty.
