ABSTRACT
Whatever else may be said about the spirited campaign to give Mr. Leonard Merrick a triumphant issue from his honourable but unmerited obscurity, clear wisdom must be recognised in the selection of “Conrad in Quest of his Youth” for the first volume of the uniform edition of his works which Messrs. Hodder and Stoughton are now publishing. It is not his first novel—he had written at least half-a-dozen before Mr. Grant Richards published “Conrad” in 1903—and he has written several since; but neither before nor after has Mr. Merrick ever given us anything with quite the same happy perfection.
