The Crisis of War and Neutrality, August, 1914 - January, 1915

Britain's position in Iran in August, 1914 was fairly straightforward and British statesmen hoped that it would remain so, and that the whole area would recline in inconsequence while the resources of empire were marshalled to defeat Germany in Europe. This turned out to be a wistful hope, for rivalries and hostilities, conflicting interests and Iranian political collapse were intensified by the opportunities and uncertainties of war.
