ABSTRACT
The 1890s represented a starting point in the movement towards Canadian women's educational, political and economic equality, all of which had implications for their sporting participation and leisure activities. These developments were correctly perceived as a threat to patriarchal hegemony by members of the dominant class/gender -middle-class males.
