ABSTRACT

The reawakening of Israeli global statecraft has brought about a profound improvement in the political status of the Jewish state, while at the same time inspiring a new, proactive orientation at home to foreign policy-making. Before proceeding to analyse the new direction it is taking, the historical overview and statistical data help to reflect on how far Israeli foreign policy has come in recent years. In Jerusalem, Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin described what transpired at the UN as an undisguised attempt to place Israel beyond the pale and to impeach the essence and foundation of Israel. In the present instance, the trio of Yitzhak Rabin, Shimon Peres and Yossi Beilin share credit for steering Israeli diplomacy in a new direction, giving it greater definition and clarity than it has known for years. However, parallel with the mainstay of Israel's foreign policy, Jerusalem planners have introduced one significant innovation by re-targeting three promising geographic regions.
