ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the attitude of the Jews of Moscow, Kiev and Minsk toward Jewish national culture, their jobs and emigration. It is based on a survey of the social orientations of 1,000 Jews in Moscow, Kiev and Minsk (333 persons in each city) collected by the Russian centre for public opinion studies in April-May 1993. These three cities were chosen because they are the capitals of the three Slav CIS countries. Jews of Moscow, Kiev and Minsk favour a revival of Jewish culture as a matter of principle but are indifferent to it in their everyday lives, when it requires investing time and effort. The conclusion is that the working Jews of Moscow, Kiev and Minsk are making good use, and hope to make even better use in the near future, of at least two aspects of the expanding economic liberalization: the right to free enterprise and the right to hold more than one job.
