ABSTRACT

A speciality within the field of signals intelligence is that which intercepts and analyses telemetry, the latter term signifying that portion of the sum of signals that contains technical information on, for example, missile launches. As developments in space technology gave rise to the launching of space probes into outer space, surveillance of space from ground-based stations, in order to monitor the space probes and their orbits, was one of the elements in determining the potential military threat this represented. The first US approach about a Norwegian space surveillance station came in October 1962. If Fauske lived up to expectations and requirements, there would be obvious advantages in linking up with Fauske I in such a way that Comint, Elint and space surveillance could complement one another. Satellites also had the potential of becoming platforms for space-based weapon systems.
