ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the potential and limitations of indigenous knowledge (IK) in tropical agricultural development with the objective of determining if the current interest in IK is simply another development band-wagon or a real step forward in the understanding and promotion of agricultural development. It describes upon the circumstances which have led to the interest in IK. The chapter examines some possible applications and implications of a greater appreciation of IK. Indigenous systems knowledge is the sum total of indigenous knowledge and includes ITK. It also includes all the process, cultural and social facets of the subject. A key factor in any future interaction of support services with IK will be the attitude of indigenous nationals at the professional level. Much of the literature on IK becomes vague when dealing with its utilisation. Social scientists appear convinced of the value of IK whilst technologists remain cautious, especially ‘indigenous’ technologists.
