ABSTRACT

The 23rd Deputies meeting on 29 June produced good progress on capital movements and some advance in the transport sector. At the 24th Deputies meeting on 20 July it was agreed that the Northern Ireland Maintenance of Employment Act might remain in force for a transitional period of five years. The next four meetings of Deputies, between 28 September and 3 November, made fairly steady but unspectacular progress on a large variety of subjects. There remained a large number of points to be settled in the Deputies, and six further meetings, spread over 10 days between 15 December and 18 January, 1972. There remained the disputed Treaty points. Considerable further progress in settling them was made on 17 January, and by the evening only some of the difficult points remained outstanding. The process of 'multilateralisation' was concluded by the Community during 18 January, not without much concern on part over fisheries. On 22 January the Treaty of Accession was signed.
