ABSTRACT

The Unwilling Hosts: State, Society and the Control of Guest Workers in South Korea by Won-Woo Park This contribution provides comprehensive information about migrant workers in South Korea. The past and the present development of the Korean economy, the labour shortage situation, and the changes in government policies and regulations concerning migrant workers are explained first. Then, the migrant workers' current situation with regard to their status, nationally, and companies where they are employed, are discussed. Along with issues and problems in the management of migrant workers from the perspective of both employers and migrant workers, the efforts of civic organisations that have raised issues concerning migrant workers and the need to improve their working conditions are discussed. Lastly, after considering the effects of migrant workers on Korea, suggestions are made as to the ways in which that country can better address and solve the issues and problems related to migrant workers.
