ABSTRACT

Democracy and Fandom: Developing a Supporters’ Trust at Northampton Town FC

Brian Lomax

Brian Lomax recounts the history of Northampton Town Supporters’ Trust, the first such trust to be formed in British football. He attempts to analyse the impact the trust has made upon the life of the Football Club, which was also the first to admit elected supporters’ representatives to full Directorships. The benefits have been not only financial, but also social and in terms of community development. The essay concludes by listing the necessary conditions for supporters’ democracy and representation to be effective in football clubs generally.
