ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the ever increasing globalization of business and how the business world has become interdependent. It also highlights the growing success of Islamic institutions being run on Islamic principles. It then moved to discuss how a large Islamic institution is still prospering in the present East Asian economic crisis. A combination of both Islamic values and Malaysian work culture contributes to the formation of some unique management practices at TH. These help TH to form a strong ILM, organizational culture and effective Human Resource Management (HRM) practices and enables it to achieve a sustained competitive advantage. Basically, TH's HRM policies are based on Skim Saraan TH. The main topics of discussion during the interviews consisted of the history and organization of TH, economic crisis and restructuring, culture, employee relations, HRM practices, impact of the economic crisis on management practices and ILMs and organization details.
