ABSTRACT

The DESERT STORM air campaign consisted of four phases, reflecting the phasing of the DESERT STORM war plan. In 1991, the images of the air war seen globally on television screens depicted mostly Phase I strategic targets on the receiving end of laser-guided bombs. Two-thirds of the sorties of the air war, however, were flown against Phase III targets to prepare the battlefield. 1 This chapter will examine the phasing of the war plan and air campaign, and conclude with a discussion of Phase III in terms of doctrine and requirements levied on air.
