ABSTRACT

The custom has grown up that surveyors have one witness to their signature unless they sign the award in each other’s presence. It is therefore a matter for the third surveyor, whether or not he decides to have his award witnessed. A copy of the letter should be sent to the other surveyor and to the parties because ultimately, one of them will be picking up the bill. All correspondence and/or communications with the third surveyor should be disclosed to the other appointed surveyor. The third surveyor may need to visit the site. If there are technical matters outside his area of competence, at issue, he must take advice from someone who is competent in that field. The cost of this advice will be included in the award.
