ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the construction and failure of garden walls. It does not include retaining walls. Garden walls should be inspected regularly because they are prone to failure; collapsing is not uncommon. In addition, garden walls are likely to be next to pavements, so they are a common cause of serious injury. A badly maintained wall may result in a huge personal liability: it may not be covered by building insurance if maintenance has been neglected.
