ABSTRACT

Sampling is critical to the usefulness of the survey results. Surveyors tend to carry a kit of general tools with them, including a mixture of specific sampling items. These are universally useful for cleaning up small amounts of debris, cleaning sampling tools and personal decontamination after sampling. If sampling has to be carried out in a number of locations in a single day, the surveyor must be sure that no asbestos contamination is being spread throughout the site. Some surveyors like to use disposable latex gloves for protection. Cement sheet or pipe is very hard and sampling usually poses little risk of fibre release. Sampling a pipe is probably easiest at a sleeve or collar joint where it may be possible to remove a sample with a very sharp knife or small hacksaw blade. Textured coatings are usually sampled with a sharp flat-bladed scraper such as a chisel, directly into the sample bag held underneath the sampling point.
