The need for energy efficiency in buildings One of the main ways in wh ich the EU and the govern ment propose to tackle climate change and reduce emissions is through greater energy efficiency, including efficiency in buildings. The build ing secto r is thought to account for approximately 40% of the EV's tota l energy consumption and 50% of the UK's total carbon d ioxide emissions (w ith residentia l build ings accounting for approximately 27% of th e UK's total carbon dioxide emissions).
