ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the introduction of a Keller Plan course. This is a control strategy (see Chapter Three) with teacher defined course objectives, a compulsory textbook and frequent objective testing to monitor student progress through the course. Class contact time is greatly reduced and lectures are few and optional. Students are made responsible for independent study within the firm parameters set by the teaching staff.

Here these principles are adapted to an introductory physiology course previously taught in a lecture/tutorial format and which had to cope with increased student numbers and much more academically varied student backgrounds. Adopting such an approach requires significant staff time and institutional support at the design stage.
