ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a series of workshop activities which have been used for self appraisal with university teachers. It presents a process which has been designed to help members of various professional groups monitor their own effectiveness in conjunction with their peers. The self appraisal process is one way of initiating a programme of professional development which is defined by the participants. Individuals define criteria of competence for their work, monitor their daily professional activities, review their performance and make plans for modifying their practice in the light of their appraisal. The chapter is written from the point of view of someone who may act as a facilitator for a self appraisal group and discusses issues in facilitating the process.
