ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the opportunities offered by modular courses as Credit Accumulation and Transfer Schemes (CATS) to widen participation in higher education encourage lifelong learning and develop European and international curriculum dimensions to students and staff and to the community at large. Learning outcomes of students to achieve on opportunities for articulation with the system of awards developed by the National Council for Vocational Qualifications (NVQ) in the United Kingdom. An important development of the European Community Course Credit Transfer System (ECTS) and trans European exchange and transfer consortium (TEXT) in attention to the difficult and sensitive issue of transfer of grades between institutions, at a local level module courses such as CATS can be used to promote networking between colleges of further education through franchising, and access courses, through validation of modules. The philosophy of CATS and adoption of credit values to describe the outcomes of learning will facilitate student mobility and articulation between a ranges of learning opportunities.
