ABSTRACT
The education of a research student in the United Kingdom has echoes of an apprenticeship system. At its worst this can mean that the student is at the mercy of an idiosyncratic relationship with a supervisor and a narrow initiation into a discipline mind-set and world view. The focus is on a narrow topic area, with many pressures to conform to the discipline paradigm.
