ABSTRACT

With the moves, outlined in Chapter 2, towards greater public accountability of further and higher education institutions for the money they spend, the collection of data for purposes of institutional evaluation is a relatively new and significant growth area within the post-compulsory educational scene in many countries, the UK included. However, in this chapter we will not focus on this area but instead we will explore more traditional aspects of evaluation; for example, methods of data collection which should help you know more about the teaching and learning processes which take place in your classroom, and how effective these processes are in promoting student learning. We shall discuss in detail only those forms of evaluation which are either tutor/lecturer or institution initiated; only passing reference will be made to those forms of evaluation which are derived from sources external to your institution.
