A Systemic Approach to the Development of Open and Flexible Learning Environments: Studies of Implementation in the UK
This chapter describes an innovative two-fold teaching strategy for the use of video tool technology to support the teaching performance and learning activities within De Montfort University. It shows how video can used to give a method of delivering lectures and demonstrations which would otherwise not possible in a conventional lecture-room setting and how video recording of tutors assessment comments, related to student work, can enhance feedback process while reducing staff workloads. In the context of this case study, use of video considered to offer a method for improving flexibility of student access to information and skills, as a means of freeing up staff time. A two-stage implementation process was used. The first stage involved use of video as a method of delivering assessment feedback to students. The second stage required greater preparation and implemented several months later. This involved the recording on to video of lectures and repetitive tasks.
