Virtually There: Flexible Learning in the New Millennium

This chapter describes how a supportive model of learning being developed by the author may help to inspire adult distance learning students during their higher educational experience. The model recognizes the difficulties of distance learners may face at the beginning, during and at the end of a course, and places great emphasis on the relationship that develops between the student and tutor during a course. The tutor give inspiration for learning through support for students who are finding it difficult to combine their studies with work and family commitments as well as promotion of the self-direction that a distance learning course requires. This inspiration may occur at two levels: First the course level, inspiration of learning may occur through the delivery of relevant course material that is applicable in practice. Second the person level; tutor to plan an individual learning programme that recognizes individuality of each student and their circumstances throughout the length of a student's studies.
