ABSTRACT

It has become fashionable in recent years to blame stress for a wide range of problems in the workplace, most notably absenteeism, underachievement, and even serious ill health. Nevertheless, most of us would readily acknowledge that we work best under a certain degree of pressure, so when does ‘pressure’ become ‘stress’, and why is it that the same pressures can motivate one person to work to the best of their abilities, and yet cause another to feel that they cannot cope? A study is under way at Sunderland Business School to investigate these issues in the context of student learning experience. This chapter discusses the current findings as they relate to student motivation.
