ABSTRACT

The course described in this chapter is a final-year option on vibration in an honours mechanical engineering degree programme. I had previously taught the subject for several years as a conventional lecture course and, although the student response to the course was satisfactory, I was concerned that there was too much emphasis on technical theory and too little stress on the application of the material to real engineering problems. It was noticeable that in the examination, the students tended to avoid questions requiring the type of diagnostic and problem-solving skills which are essential to engineering practice.
